Inner West CrossFit Sydney
David Buckley (CrossFit Head Trainer / Owner)
Crossfit for me is giving your all and pushing yourself to your own limits and capabilities. You will discover that you are capable of things you thought were unachievable and find along the way, changes to your body and mind that dramatically improve your fitness level and life.
I first discovered CrossFit in 2008 while surfing the net. I liked the look of the workouts as I had done a lot of the running and weightlifting movements during the previous 10 years in my professional Rugby League career. At the time though, I was still playing Rugby League and although CrossFit really appealed to me, I continued with the normal ’3 sets of 10-12 reps’ type programs.
After a bad collision in a game in February 2009 I needed my 3rd shoulder reconstruction. It was then I decided to hang up the boots and looked for a new training approach.
That’s when I re-discovered crossfit.com and decided to give it a go. From the first workout I was blown away, amazed how such a short workout could achieve so much. I decided to find a CrossFit affiliate and start training. Within a month my strength had increased, my strength endurance had dramatically improved and my overall fitness was changed forever.
Inner West CrossFit will give clients the opportunity to train in the best possible environment, where you are judged on how much effort you put in, not on what you look like or what body shape you are. You will gain a sense of achievement as you learn new skills, improve your times in workouts and increase your work capacity, all while having the best possible fun in an atmosphere where team work and camaraderie is as important as the workout.

I support David 100% with his decision to run a CrossFit gym. I knew his passion and personality would win hearts and build a strong CrossFit community in the Inner West. CrossFit is so much more than a place to work out, you make friends, socialise outside of training with family and friends (we regularly get together for drinks or events outside of CrossFit) and you get to experience new work outs and push yourself to levels you didn’t even think you were capable of. The thrill you get when you hit your personal best and the celebration between you and others for reaching that goal is unlike anything you will ever see at a “Globo Gym.” You have a personal training coach each and every session you attend, so you ask as many questions as you want and they can
advise you on diet and life style as well as set your goals and help you achieve them, you will not get that an a normal gym.
Come in and try a work out to experience for yourself CrossFit in all its glory. Age, size, gender and fitness level is nota factor in our world, every one is capable of CrossFit because our specialty is NOT specialising. You will be welcomed as apart of the team as soon as you walk through the door and you will walk away from your first session invigorated and inspired.
I hope I have intrigued you enough for you to come in for a session.
Thank you and hope to see you at our Leichhardt studio soon!

What I love about CrossFit is the simplicity. When the plasma screens, elliptical’s, leg abductors and other fluff areremoved all you have left is the weight on the bar, your heart, and the clock. And most importantly the rest of the gym who knows exactly what you are about to go through, they don’t care if your stronger, slower, fatter or fitter. What is important is that you put in the hard work. It’s hard work that makes you better than you have been.
I first came across CrossFit 10 years ago whilst at university. Ultimately it was CrossFit that got me involved in Olympic style weightlifting, it was CrossFit that got me looking beyond the bodybuilding magazines and it is CrossFit that gets people to have a good hard look at what real fitness is about.
Fitness is about doing what you need to do. Although I may be able to get the work done, I know that when I work for it, I can get it done better. There is always something to improve on.
At Inner West CrossFit, we will challenge you to not just find your limits and we will be right there teaching you how to move way beyond them. Best of all you will be surrounded by people who are doing exactly the same thing.

Having a history in national level sprinting and grade rugby union for much of my adult life I have always kept a decent level of fitness. In between being transferred for work three times in five years I maintained a healthy attendance at my local gym as well as maintaining a rugby career, until a head clash resulted in a broken eye socket, cheek bone and permanent nerve damage down the left side of my face. With contact sports being taken off the table as a viable sporting option I was left with a need to fill that competitive drive that many athletes crave. That was until my personal trainer at the time showed me a YouTube video of “Fran”. I knew this was exactly what I was looking for.
It was around this same time that I was being seconded to San Diego USA to work for a sister company. The initial secondment was to be for three months, so I committed to giving CrossFit in San Diego my very best effort. I became a member of CrossFit East Village in downtown San Diego which is owned by two Navy SEALs. Day after day, week after week, I started to improve and before I knew it the three month secondment turned into 16 months and my fitness level was at an all-time high. What also happened over the course of 16 months was that I went from not knowing a soul in San Diego to being exposed to a great network of friends, sporting and professional resources. The two Navy SEALs who own CFEV went through BUDs with and were personal friends of Michael Murphy whom the CrossFit Hero WOD “Murph” is dedicated to. Through these individuals I was introduced to SEALFIT and was able to experience firsthand the SEALFIT Combat Defence Course and SEALFIT training methods. Through this network I made great friends with CrossFit HQ members and affiliated companies both on a professional and personal level. Most importantly I have met people I will forever cherish as my friends. I have CrossFit to thank for this.
On return to Australia August 2011 I wanted to build on the training knowledge I gained in my time in the USA. Having been CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Trainer Certified whilst in San Diego, the next logical step was to complete the Level 1 CrossFit Trainer Course and pursue a Certificate III in Fitness Instruction. Another goal was to find that community, the spirit, and the feeling of being a part of something which is how I came to be at Inner West CrossFit.

Dexter
Woof! My name is Dexter. I’m a playful Bullmastiff and am the proud mascot of Inner West CrossFit. I enjoy chasing balls (and chomping on them), running around after mum and dad (Gemma and Dave) and am partial to the odd snooze in the sun.
I sometimes come down to the Leichhardt training studio (or “box” as my dad calls it) on a Saturday, so hope to see you there… we can shake paws and maybe have a game of fetch
